If your new tablet has arrived and it’s faulty, or the shoes you’ve ordered have come in the wrong size, there’s no need to worry. Amazon’s returns policy ensures that you can return most items within 30 days of purchase for a refund or exchange.
Which items can’t you return?
There are a few items which are excluded from the return policy. These include:
- Digital downloads such as films, music or games
- DVDs, CDs or software which you have unsealed after delivery (except if the items are defective)
- Products not suitable for return due to hygiene or health reasons, if unsealed after delivery
- Goods that expire or deteriorate rapidly, such as fresh produce, for example.
If you’re unsure whether your item is eligible for return, it’s best to call Amazon rather than using their live chat or email service, as you’ll be able to speak to one of their customer service representatives, who can help you with your return.
How to return an item to Amazon
The options you’ll have available to you will depend on the item and the seller – e.g. whether you bought the item directly from Amazon, or through a third party seller. However, you can’t just send something back because you’ve changed your mind. You’ll need to provide a valid reason for the return, for example, the item was faulty, was not as described, or didn’t fit.
Returns are processed through the Returns Support Centre on Amazon’s website. For items sold by a seller, you can check their returns policy in the Returns Support Centre. You’ll need to submit a return request for approval. If the seller doesn’t respond within two business days, you can file a claim under Amazon’s A to Z Guarantee.
For items sold by Amazon, you can select from a range of return methods, some of which require you to print your own label and return authorization.
How long does it take to get a refund?
The time taken to provide you with a refund can vary depending on the payment method used. Amazon may deduct costs from your refund, depending on the reason for your return. Refunds are generally issued to the payment method used at the time of purchase and can take anywhere from an instant transfer, to 7 business days.
Does Amazon cover return postage costs?
Amazon will refund your return postage costs for items sold for or fulfilled by Amazon (the cost of standard delivery) if you are returning shoes or clothing, or if your item is:
- Damaged or defective
- Does not match the description
Keep an eye out for excessive postage charges, and if you feel that a third party is taking advantage of you then contact Amazon and put in a complaint.
Can you return gifts to Amazon?
If you’re the recipient of a t-shirt that doesn’t fit or a DVD you’ve seen before, you can return your gift to Amazon for a refund, through the Returns Support Centre. You’ll need to enter the order number for the item (found on the packing slip), but if you don’t have this, you can call Amazon to speak to one of their customer service representatives. Alternatively, you can always talk to the person who gave you the gift and let them apply for a refund. Gift recipients will receive a refund as an Amazon gift card. If you’re the gift giver, the refund will be to your original payment method.
How about exchanges?
Items can be exchanged on Amazon through the Returns Support Centre or by calling Amazon for assistance. If you are exchanging your item for the same item in a different size or colour and there is a cost increase, Amazon will usually cover this. To exchange your item for a different one which is more expensive, the price difference will be charged to your original payment method.
If you are unsure whether or not you’re eligible for a refund, or have any questions about returning items, it’s always best to give Amazon a call.
