The History of Tesco Insurance
Always looking to expand and diversify the services, Tesco plc looked to gain a hold on the financial market, so in 1997 they joined forces with the Royal Bank of Scotland to form Tesco Bank, or Tesco Personal Finance as it was originally known. In the initial launch they were aiming to provide personal finance to customers, launching their first credit card in July of that year.
In August 1997, following the success of their launch and credit card services, they announced their savings, loans and home insurance products. By 2002, eight more products had been added to their portfolio of services, including car, pet and travel insurance. They also became the first supermarket to offer travel money in their stores in 2004.
Wanting to have complete control of the business, Tesco bought out the Royal Bank of Scotland’s 50% share in the business, making them a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Tesco Group. The following year, Tesco Bank opened their second headquarters, and 2011 saw the opening of a second headquarters. During this time, Tesco migrated all data and services to their systems to give complete consistency with the services and systems.
2012 also saw more expansion in the list of products, with Tesco Bank now offering mortgages and cash ISA’s. Furthermore to offer additional perks to insurance customers, they introduced the black box, designed to track driving behaviour to help bring down the cost of car insurance.
Tesco Bank became the winner of the Uswitch Award for ‘Best Overall Satisfaction’, ‘Most Recommended’ and ‘Best Value for Money’ in 2014, and the ‘Mortgage award 2014 for ‘Best Direct Lender’. They won the award for ‘Best Overall Direct provider 2014’ the ‘Scottish Financial Enterprise Award 2014’ and won an ‘HR Network Award’ later in the year.
