The history of Tesco
The founder of Tesco was Joseph Cohen who ran a market stall in Hackney, East London in 1919. He sold war-surplus groceries from his market stall and later went on to run a group of market stalls in the area. He founded the company and came up with the name in 1924 when he bought a shipment of tea from Thomas Edward Stockwell. Cohen made labels for the tea by combing the first initials of Stockwell’s name (TES) with the first two letters of his own, forming Tesco.
The first store was opened in 1929 in Middlesex, England and the first self-service store was opened in St Alban’s in 1956. The first Tesco supermarket was opened in Maldon in the same year.
During the 1950’s and 1960’s the company grew organically through expansion and acquisitions of other chains of stores. By the end of the 1960’s they owned over 800 stores throughout the United Kingdom.
In 1996, Tesco introduced their loyalty card scheme called the Tesco clubcard. This allowed customers to collect points with each purchase which could later be redeemed in the form of money off vouchers. Later that year, they launched their online shopping service allowing customers to purchase groceries online and have them delivered to their door.
