The History of T-Mobile

The history of T-Mobile goes back to Germany’s first mobile communications services radiotelephone systems that were owned by Deutsche Bundespost. In 1985, they were responsible for launching Germany’s first mobile phone network.

In 1989 Deutsche Bundespost was reorganised, and the company created a new unit devoted to telecommunications called the Deutsche Bundespost Telekom, which was later renamed Deutsche Telekom AG in 1995.

In 1996, Deutsche Telekom was privatised and entered the stock market, during this same year the company also started to use the T- prefix in the branding of its subsidiaries. From 2002, all international operations became known as T-Mobile.

Eight years later, in 2010, the DT subsidiary – Telekom Deutschland GmbH – was created through merging T-Home and T-Mobile Germany. This meant that the T-Mobile brand was no longer used in Germany, operating simply under Telekom, but it was still retained outside of German borders under country-specific divisions that fall under the remit of T-Mobile International AG.

Since T-Mobile has been established, it was won various awards as a telecommunications provider – winning a staggering 164 awards on both a local and national level since 2004 until the present day. Some of the national awards include the ‘Diamond Award for Organizational Leadership’.

T-Mobile was also named in the Nation’s Top 20 Information Technology Teams by Information Week Magazine (2007) and was ranked highly in the World’s Most Ethical Companies list.

T-Mobile is still present in many countries across the globe, including many European countries. Although in the UK, it merged with Orange SE to become EE, the UK’s largest mobile phone operator, many still consider it as T-Mobile.
