Known simply as Santander in the UK, the Spanish owned bank was originally formed from the Abbey National Building Society back in 1944 – which was itself formed by merging two other banking names.
Despite being virtually unheard of in the UK prior to 2004, Santander is now one of the biggest names on the high street – offering a range of current and savings accounts, mortgages, credit cards and a variety of online and mobile banking services.
Santander customer services are easily accessible on 0871 423 0156. Santander’s 123 current accounts have revolutionised the market by offering customers cashback on selected bills plus interest on the account balance.
These perks are in exchange for a modest monthly fee, plus a commitment to pay a set monthly amount, and set up two active direct debits. If you want to know whether this would benefit you then call Santander’s customer service number on 0871 423 0156.
The History of Santander Bank
Following the listing on the London Stock Exchange of the Abbey National Building Society in 1988, it was acquired by Banco Santander S.A. in November 2004. Banco Santander itself was founded in 1857 in Spain.
Other institutions acquired by Banco Santander included the Alliance and Leicester Building Society in 2008 followed by the Bradford and Bingley Building Society in that same year.
The three acquisitions, Abbey National, Alliance and Leicester and Bradford and Bingley were all rebranded and brought under the Santander umbrella in 2010. In the same year, Santander put in motion plans to buy some branches of RBS in England and Wales as well as some Scottish branches of NatWest.
Their 123 cashback credit card was first launched on the market in November 2011. The success of this venture saw the idea extended to the 123 current accounts in March 2012. Santander also captured the children’s savings market by offering a similar 123 Mini Account, for children up to the age of 18. This was launched in March 2014.
