The History of Samsung Support
Lee Byung-chull founded the company in 1938 for trading goods. From its humble beginning selling local produce, it prospered, moving its headquarters to Seoul in 1947. In this same year, Lee embarked on a joint investment with Cho Hong-jai, group founder of Hyosung, into a new start-up company Samsung Mulsan Gongsa, which is now known as Samsung C&T CORPORATION.
It wasn’t until the late 1960’s that Samsung ventured into the electronics industry, followed by the shipbuilding industry in the mid-1970s. During the 1960’s, when Samsung initially joined the electronics field, the company formed several different divisions that included Samsung Electronics Devices, Samsung Corning, Samsung Electro-mechanics and Samsung Semiconductor & Telecommunications. The first product they produced was a black and white television set.
Founder Lee died in 1987, which resulted in the Samsung Group being divided into four core business groups. This comprised of the Samsung Group, Shinsegae Group, CJ Group and the Hansol Group, which from 1990 onwards all operate entirely independently of Samsung Group. The Samsung Group was made up of four subsidiaries called Samsung Electronics that is the biggest information technology company in the world; Samsung Heavy Industries who are the second biggest shipbuilders; and the Samsung Engineering and C&T Construction companies.
Samsung Electronics invested heavily into research and development, opening assembly plants in Portugal in 1982, New York in 1984, Tokyo in 1985, England in 1987 and Texas in 1996. Since the 1990’s Samsung has grown in popularity and has increased its global product range to include electronics, aircraft and mobile phones – this being the company’s primary source of income. Samsung sold off the company’s subsidiaries, merged with other operations and concentrated on three main industries, electronics, engineering and chemicals.
Some of their accolades include being the world’s largest producer of memory chips in 1992; developing the first liquid-crystal display screen in 1995 and ten years later becoming the world’s biggest manufacturer for them. In 2006, Samsung and Sony formed the S-LCD partnership, which was designed to provide a constant supply of LCD panels for both companies. In 2000, Samsung began working on digital TV and smartphones, and in 2012 became the largest mobile phone maker.
