The History of Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s was established in 1869, as a partnership between married couple John James Sainsbury and Mary Ann Sainsbury. Originally, the store was a fresh food retailer, and it was located in Holborn in London on 173 Drury Lane. The sign on the store stated ‘Quality perfect, prices lower’. One of the things that made the store stand out from others at the time was the fact that it sold a broad selection of its own label lines. Each store had six departments – fresh meats, cooked meats, poultry and game, bacon and hams, and dairy. Groceries were not introduced until later down the line. By 1922, Sainsbury’s had become the biggest grocery group in the UK. However, the Second World War proved to be an extremely challenging time for the company because the vast majority of their stores were trading in the capital and they were either bombed or damaged.
