Heating our homes has become more and more expensive over the years, so wouldn’t it be great if there was a more efficient way to do it?
For decades, thermostats have been a key part of our heating systems at home, but in recent years we’ve seen the development of next-generation ‘smart’ thermostats, designed to give you much more control over your heating.
So, what is remote heating?
Quite simply, remote heating lets you control your heating and hot water remotely, via a smart thermostat that you control through an app on your smartphone, tablet or laptop. This means you can make sure it’s nice and toasty before you even walk through the door. (Remember, smart thermostats aren’t the same as smart meters, which send meter readings to your energy supplier).
While a traditional thermostat lets you alter the temperature in your home through a dial or control panel, a remote heating system that is controlled by a smart thermostat means you don’t even need to be in your home to control it. These smart thermostats are connected to your boiler via Wifi and an app on your phone.
What is Hive?
British Gas’ smart thermostat is called Hive, and it’s the perfect option for anyone who wants to take control of their heating with a traditional energy supplier. Intrigued? Let’s take a look at a few reasons why you should think about making the most of this new technology.
With Hive, there’s no fuss. It only takes an hour and a half for British Gas engineers to get the system up and running in your home. There’s no extra call-out fee either, so all you need to do use the code in the box to book an engineer for a time that suits you.
It works together with the heating system that is in situ in your home already, so you don’t need to worry about forking out for a brand-new one. In addition, if you have a separate hot water tank, you’ll be able to control your hot water, too.
You’re in control
Download the Hive app (it’s free of charge) to your smartphone, laptop or tablet and you’re ready to go – it makes controlling your heating and hot water as simple as changing the channel on TV.
You can even set your own heating and hot water schedules depending on your needs; it allows you set up to six time slots every day. But you’ll still have the freedom to turn your heating on and off and up and down whenever you like. If you want to make any alterations to your usual schedule (for example, if you go on holiday), just use the ‘boost’ button. This also works with your hot water system, which can be boosted for up to six hours.
When the temperature drops in those chilly months, Hive helps to protect your pipes from freezing. When your home drops below 7°C, the frost protection system automatically activates to help keep your pipes in tip-top condition.
You could save money
According to British Gas, you could save up to £130 a year on your energy bills by never having to heat an empty home. It enables you to be much more efficient with your usage, because you won’t waste as much. For example, if you’re away on holiday, you just inform your app of your from/to dates and your heating will be put on stand-by until you get back. Just imagine how nice it will feel to come back to a warm home.
Do you need to be British Gas customer to have Hive installed?
No, but if you’re a British Gas customer you’ll get Hive at a reduced rate of £149 (including installation). For everyone else, it costs £199 (including installation). Just remember that this device isn’t portable, so you won’t be able to take it with you if you move house. Get in touch with British Gas to find out more information.
