The History of Primark
Primark as we know it today began life in Dublin, Ireland in June 1969, when Arthur Ryan opened a small store on Mary Street, under the name of Penney’s. The store was so successful that following an expansion and further success in Ireland they decided to make a move into the UK market.
In 1971 they opened a large store in the centre of Belfast, this was followed in 1973 by a further 4 stores in England, the first of which was situated in Derby. In 2001 they opened their largest store, on Market Street in Manchester in the former Lewis’s Department store building
Over the years Primark have expanded drastically 2005. They bought Littlewoods, C&A and Woolworths, while they kept a number of the store in key locations they then went on to sell the rest.
It wasn’t until May 2006 that they branched out into Europe, opening their first store in Madrid, Spain; this is their second largest store after Manchester.
In 2011 the first Primark concession opened, and their products are now stocked in 3 branches of the Selfridges Department Store – the Trafford Centre – Manchester, The Bull Ring – Birmingham and Oxford Street – London.
Because the American J. C Penney has the name Penney’s registered in the UK the alternative name of Primark was created for all their stores but the ones in Ireland.
Today Primark owns 38 stores in Ireland (which it operates under the name Penney’s) and 161 stores in the UK as well as stores in Spain, The Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France the US and their most recent store which opened in April 2016 in Italy.
They employ a staggering 57,000 people in their 325 stores worldwide. They have a corporate headquarters, which is based in Reading, and an International one that is in Dublin in the recently redeveloped Arthur Ryan House, which is named after the man who founded the company.
