The History of O2

Originally Cellnet, O2 was incorporated in 1985. It was a joint venture between the BT Group and Securicor. The BT Group acquired Securicor’s minority share in 1999 and the company rebranded as BT Cellnet.

Together with BT Group’s mobile telecommunications businesses in other parts of Europe, in 2000 BT Cellnet launched the world’s first commercial GPRS – BT Cellnet. This was later spun off from the BT Group in 2002 to form a new holding company, mmO2 Plc.

They introduced the new “O2” brand for the businesses, later becoming O2 Plc. In 2002, O2 was purchased by the Spanish telecommunications company, Telefónica. The terms of the acquisition required Telefónica to retain the O2 brand.
