History of John Lewis
John Lewis himself was a tailor of the highest degree. Once his apprenticeship was over he opened up his own drapery store on Oxford Street, London in 1864. From there, he then went on to open a second store called Peter Jones in Sloane Square, London. Lewis’ son John Spedan Lewis took over running of this second store and founded the John Lewis Partnership in 1920.
In 1933 the partnership purchased its first store outside of London; the long-established Jessop & Son in Nottingham. In 1940 the John Lewis Partnership bought Selfridge Provincial Stores which was a group of 15 provincial and suburban department stores from across the country. The first store constructed as part of a shopping centre was Jessops in Nottingham. Since 2001, almost all of the stores in the partnership have been re-branded so that they trade under the name John Lewis.
John Lewis was the first department store group in the UK to adopt central buying, launching their own brand label “Jonell” in 1937. Since 2001 this has brand name has also been replaced with the brand John Lewis with other own brands being added such as Collection by John Lewis and John Lewis & Co.
