The History of IKEA
When Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA in 1943 it was mostly a mail-order business which began selling furniture 5 years after it was founded. The name IKEA is an anagram using the first letters of Kamprad’s name, the name of the farm he grew up on and the name of his home town. The first IKEA store was opened in Älmhult, Småland in 1958 and the first stores opened outside of Sweden were those in Norway in 1963 and in Denmark in 1969.
During the 1970’s, IKEA stores began to spread across Europe with the first store to be opened outside of Scandinavia being in Switzerland in 1973 and closely followed by one opened in West Germany in 1974. Later that decade stores opened in other part of the world such as Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Canada. The 1980’s saw IKEA stores open in France, USA, Poland, Italy and the United Kingdom. During the 1990’s and 2000’s, IKEA expanded further into other countries all over the world. IKEA is still expanding its empire with recently opened stores in Qatar, South Korea and India.
IKEA stores are unlike any other retail outlets in that the design of the interior is quite unique. Most stores operate a one way system through a showroom of products. Customers are invited to view the products and write down product names as they browse. These products can then be collected from a self-serve warehouse area in ready to assemble flat pack kits which are then paid for at a checkout. All IKEA stores also contain a play area for children where they can be left by parents and collected once they have completed their shopping. IKEA stores also contain cafes at the exit which offer a range of meals based on traditional Swedish recipes.
