The History of HSBC
HSBC was established in 1865, by Scotsman Thomas Sutherland, when he was working for The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. This may explain the story that the HSBC logo is based on the flag of St Andrew, the Saltire – although it’s a red and white hexagon.
Sutherland recognised the demand for banking facilities locally in Hong Kong and on the China coast, so helped to set up the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). The first office in Hong Kong opened in March 1865, and the second a month later in Shanghai
Since the late 19th Century, the local Chinese population of Hong Kong has referred to the bank as ‘Wayfoong’. Translated, this means ‘focus of wealth’. By 1900, HSBC was operating in 16 countries and financing trade around the globe.
In 1992, HSBC merged with the Midland Bank, an operation as old as HSBC itself, in one of the biggest mergers in banking history. The business was rebranded in 1999 and HSBC became a well-known high street brand in the UK.
Today, HSBC is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organisations. It serves almost 50 million customers from its four global businesses: Retail Banking and Wealth Management, Commercial Banking, Global Banking and Markets, and Global Private Banking.
HSBC’s international network now covers 72 countries and territories in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and North America and Latin America. HSBC is listed on the London, Hong Kong, New York, Paris and Bermuda stock exchanges, and has around 213,000 shareholders in 131 countries and territories.
HSBC believes that its values reflect its heritage by helping people to make the best of their money in ways that fulfil goals and dreams. They believe these values define the organisation and provide HSBCs distinctive offer in the field of financial services. Their dependability might be best demonstrated by the fact that the first business investor on the Bank’s books is still a customer today. There can be no better recommendation than that!
