How to get rid of Amazon Prime

As you may already know, with an Amazon Prime membership comes a whole host of benefits. You’ll have access to free next-day deliveries, music, video streaming and so much more, all for £7.99 a month. Plus, you can even try it out before you commit with a free Amazon Prime trial.

But what if you want to cancel your Amazon Prime membership? If your free trial is coming to an end soon – or you just don’t want your membership anymore – then it’s actually pretty easy to stop your membership. Our straightforward guide below shows you how to cancel your Amazon Prime membership without any hassle.

How easy is it to cancel Amazon Prime?

Whether you are a long-standing Prime member or you’ve just signed up for a free trial, you can cancel your subscription at any time with no penalties. You will need to see out the subscription to the end of the current month, but once you have cancelled you won’t be billed again. Cancelling your subscription is a relatively pain-free process but there are a few steps you need to follow.

To cancel a full Amazon Prime membership

If you’re already a full paying Amazon Prime member, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Sign into ‘Your Account’
  2. Go to ‘Manage Your Prime Membership’
  3.  To end a paid membership, click ‘End Membership’ (you’ll see this on the left-hand side)
  4. This will take you through to a new page, where you’ll be reminded of all your Amazon Prime membership benefits – it’s Amazon’s way of trying to convince you to change your mind and stay!
  5. To continue with your cancellation, just click ‘I do not want my benefits’
  6. Finally, choose between cancelling your membership immediately or at the end of your subscription period.

If you decide to end your subscription straight away, then you could be eligible for a partial refund. The amount you’re entitled to will be based on your usage. But ultimately, whichever cancellation option you go for, you’ll be bringing your membership to an end and you won’t be charged again.

To cancel a free trial

If you want to cancel your free trial before your paid membership begins, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Sign into ‘Your Account’
  2. Go to ‘Manage Your Prime Membership’
  3. To end a paid membership, click ‘Cancel Free Trial’ or ‘Do Not Continue’ (you’ll see this on the left-hand side)
  4. At this stage, you’ll go through to a new page, where Amazon will remind you of all the benefits you’ll miss out on if you leave.
  5.  To continue with your cancellation, just click ‘I do not want my benefits’

If you choose ‘Do Not Continue’ when cancelling your free trial, you’ll still have access to your benefits until your trial period ends. After this, your membership will be cancelled and you won’t have to pay for Amazon Prime membership.

Don’t get caught out – set a reminder

If you fail to cancel your Amazon Prime subscription before your free trial period comes to an end, then you’ll automatically be transferred to a paid membership. This will cost £7.99 a month or £79 for the full year. So if you’re unsure whether you want to continue, it’s worth setting yourself a reminder to cancel before the deadline. Or, you could simply cancel right after you sign up – you’ll still enjoy free benefits for a one-month period, but you’ll have peace of mind that you won’t have to fork out.

Need to contact Amazon?

If you have any questions about how to cancel your Amazon Prime account, then you can always get in touch with the Amazon customer service team. You’ll find all the details over on their ‘Contact Us’ page.

Feel free to send them an email – you can usually expect a relatively swift response. But If you want to speak to an Amazon customer service team member in person, we’d always recommend picking up the phone as your first course of action.
