Giffgaff isn’t like many other, more traditional mobile providers out there – they like to do things a little differently. If you don’t already know, Giffgaff is a mobile virtual network operator, which means it runs its service off an existing network, rather than its own individual network. In the case of Giffgaff, this network is O2 (who actually own Giffgaff).
For many Giffgaff customers, part of the attraction of Giffgaff is the flexibility. The main thing is that there’s absolutely no contract to worry about – so you won’t have to worry about being tied into the same service for 18 or 24 months. It couldn’t be simpler: you can change your package each month if you wish, and you’re free to leave at any time.
Read on to find out more about how Giffgaff works and how you can cancel your SIM.
How does Giffgaff work?
Giffgaff is perhaps best known for the sim-only deals (or ‘goodybags’), which give you minutes, texts and data from £5 a month. You can also get ‘gigabags’, which are data-only.
To get started, you order a free Giffgaff SIM online, and you’ll receive it a few days later in the post. Then head to Giffgaff.com to register your SIM to the network, and top up your Giffgaff account, or add a goodybag. You’ll also need to confirm that you’re happy to go ahead with using the Giffgaff service.
How to change your goodybag
If you’ve set up your top-up or goodbag to recur every month, it’ll automatically renew each month and your account will be charged. But if you change your mind, you’ll free to change this.
All you need to do is log on to your account and head to the payment settings section. Here you can turn off any recurring top-ups or goodybags. In addition, if you’re going away (on a long holiday, for example) and you won’t be needing any top-ups for a while, you can simply remove your card details and re-enter them when you come back.
How to cancel your monthly payment
Remember, with Giffgaff, there’s no contract for you to cancel. But if you no longer want to use the service, you’ll need to make sure you stop your goodybag from recurring each month, as well as any automatic top-ups.
It couldn’t be easier to cancel your monthly payment. Simply log into your Giffgaff account, and in ‘My GiffGaff’, you’ll see ‘My payment details’. Click on this and remove your card details. You can do this at any time, and you’ll no longer be charged.
If you’ve only just joined…
Once you’ve activated your Giffgaff SIM, you’ll have up to 14 days to cancel your registration (which is known as the cancellation period). You’ll need to contact Giffgaff via your Giffgaff account in order to cancel, or you can fill in a form and send it to Giffgaff by post.
If you cancel within this timeframe, you’ll be refunded as follows:
- If you bought credits and used some of them before you cancel, you’ll be refunded for your current balance.
- If you bought a goodybag, you’ll be refunded for the amount you haven’t already used. If you haven’t used any, you’ll receive a full refund.
