The History of Austrian Airlines
Austrian Airlines was founded on 4th April 1957 when Air Austria and Austrian Airways merged.
It was not until September 1957, however, that the company as it is known today, Austrian Airlines AG, was founded under the name Österreichische Luftverkehrs AG. On 31st March 1958, their very first scheduled flight went from Zurich to London in a leased Vickers Viscount 779 plane.
It was not until 1963 that the company launched its domestic service, with their transatlantic service following in 1969 with their first flight from Vienna to New York, which routed via Brussels. This flight was set up with the cooperation of Sabena, the then national airline of Belgium.
In 1998 Austrian Airlines completed a 100% takeover of fellow Austrian company Tyrolean Airways, which had been operating since it was founded in 1979. Following a number of transfers and reintegration’s between the two companies, Tyrolean was eventually dissolved in March 2015.
Over the years the design on the livery of all the Austrian Airlines planes has changed a number of times. However, the colours have remained consistent – red and white for the Austrian Flag. The current design features a red chevron on the tail fin with a drop shadow just below it.
