The History of AirBnB
AirBnb was founded in August 2008 as a result of an idea conceived in 2007 by Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia two of the co-founders of the company.
Unable to afford the rent on their San Francisco loft they came up with the idea of turning their living room into a bed and breakfast with the use of air mattresses and homemade breakfast. They were able to accommodate three guests from a sold out design trade show who had been unable to get accommodation. Nathan Blecharczyk joined them as the 3rd co-founder in 2008 and AirBed & Breakfast, as they were known, was born.
The company name was shortened to Airbnb.com in 2009 when they expanded to include a variety of different property types and not just air mattresses. Among those properties they listed on the website were Houses, apartments, castles, boats, manor houses, tree houses, tee-pi, igloos and even private islands.
The company grew rapidly and had to take on more staff to cope with demand. In 2011 they had reached 1 million bookings since the idea had first taken shape, this was quickly followed in January 2012 with the announcement that the figure had reached 5 million nights booked and by June 2012 this figure had doubled, with a staggering 75% of the bookings being made outside of continental United States.
In June 2015 AirBnb sponsored Manor F1 Team, and their logo appeared on both the cars and overalls of the team. October 2015 saw Jersey City become the first city in the New York Metropolitan area to legalise AirBnb by adding it to their current body of hotels and motels that pay taxes.
The company is still privately owned and operated by Airbnb Inc.
Today AirBnb has over 1,500,000 listings on its website, spread across 34,000 cities and 191 countries. Thanks to numerous acquisitions, including Accoleo in Hamburg, CrashPdder in London, NabeWise, and Localmind, the company has been able to add more properties to its ever-expanding database. They now have 19 offices worldwide, with their head office remaining in San Francisco.
