Who are AA?
The AA, formerly known as The Automobile Association, are a UK based automotive services company. Founded in 1905, the company demutualised in 1999 becoming a private company. In 2002, the AA Motoring Trust was created to ensure public interest was considered, as well as road safety activities. As of 2017, they had around 7454 employees across the UK. Their biggest competitors are Green Flag and RAC.

They’re mostly renowned for their breakdown cover and recovery. They can provide cover from as little as £5/per month across both the UK and Europe. Their team aims to fix as many cars as possible roadside, claiming to fix around 8/10 cars roadside allowing the occupant to drive themselves home.
As well as all their vehicle offerings, they also give customers the chance to take out a loan. This doesn’t have to be used for cars, it can also be used for anything including your home and travel. They also provide insurance, including over 50’s life insurance, home insurance, travel insurance, pet insurance and more.

What are the AA ratings and awards?
As well as all their service offerings, they also provide a ratings service for its customers. The businesses rated are from the following:
- Hotels, Guest Accommodation & Self Catering Accommodation – The AA awards their ratings according to a system based on quality standards and also on a number of other criteria. These standards are agreed by the AA as well as a variety of tourist authorities in the UK. Places are awarded anything between a 1* to a 5* review. Places that are top of their class are awarded a “Red Star” and also “AA Inspectors’ Choice” award. For guest accommodation, similar properties are awarded a “Gold Star”.
- Campsites & Caravan Parks – Awards are based on a five-point scale on a variety of different factors. Sites with similar ratings can be split out based on a percentage score for a more accurate comparison.
- Restaurants – They award their “AA Rosettes” on a 1-5 rosettes award basis. They set the standards very high with around one in ten restaurants deemed worthy of even receiving 1 rosette. In the UK and Ireland, there are around 2000 restaurants that hold an AA rosette.
